Program Brief: This residence is designed to utilize the thermal characteristics of the earth, both in the hillside and in the masonry that is the major building material. The home is sited in the Appalachian Southeast so both passive heating and cooling will be needed. Half of the house is built into the hillside and there is ample south facing windows with large overhangs. The tower acts as a thermal chimney and reservoir, provides light, and opens the space of the interior. There are 3 bedrooms and 3-1/2 baths. The design provides small but quality living along with office and/or work space.
